It was no surprise that La La Land won five Baftas on Sunday evening. But what of the other films on offer?

The films Arrival, I, Daniel Blake and The Girl on the Train have all been on general release but films such as Girl With All the Gifts, The Hard Stop and foreign-language movies such as Julieta and Mustang have hardly appeared in cinemas near me.

I suggest cinema programmers make an effort to screen films other than the big-budget spectaculars and also show films in languages other than English. Bafta needs to monitor these anomalies too and try to ensure such films are shown at multiplexes and local cinemas prior to the awards.

We can’t all get tickets to the London Film Festival, which showcases many independently made films, and we are therefore deprived from seeing the nominated films.

The Bafta ceremony rightly celebrates the best of film but the academy must ensure that we can see the films which are being voted on.
