Arsene Wenger warns next Arsenal manager over 'very hostile' Old Trafford reception

1/29

Arsene Wenger expects his successor at Arsenal to get a "very hostile" reception at Old Trafford after he bid farewell on Sunday.

Wenger will stand down as Gunners manager at the end of the season, calling time on almost 22 years at the helm, with his final home game in a week's time with the visit of Burnley.

Manchester United, who won the game in injury time, marked Wenger's final visit at Arsenal boss with a gift presented by Sir Alex Ferguson, in contrast to the expected reception of a visiting rival coach.

Wenger does not expect any sentiment to last, however, joking that whoever follows in his footsteps will not receive similar treatment.

When asked about his warm reception, Wenger said: "Very nice, it's classy and you enjoy it.

"I have come here for a long, long time and next year somebody else will be on the bench and will get a very hostile reception as well, don't worry!"

Sir Alex beckoned Jose Mourinho over when handing Wenger his present ahead of kick-off before the current United manager stepped away.

Mourinho said United's did "fantastically well as a club" to mark the occasion before explaining his decision to leave the old rivals alone.

He said: "I thought it would mean more for Sir Alex to come down than myself because as a United manager I played against Mr Wenger three or four times over a couple of years.

"The big rivalry in the history of both clubs was between them so I thought it was for Sir Alex to come."
