Germany have received a major boost ahead of this summer’s Euros after Julian Nagelsmann ended speculation over his future by signing a new contract.

Nagelsmann’s previous deal was due to expire after Euro 2024 and his new terms runs beyond the World Cup in two years’ time.

The 36-year-old had been appointed by the German FA in September last year on a short-term contract after they sacked Hansi Flick.

Nagelsmann had been attracting plenty of interest from clubs, who thought he would be on the market this summer.

Bayern Munich, who axed him in March last year, were keen to hire Nagelsmann and he had also been mentioned as someone that could take charge of Liverpool or Manchester United.

But, Nagelsmann confirmed on Friday morning he will now be staying with Germany after holding successful talks with them.

“This is a decision of the heart,” he said. “It is a great honour to be able to train the national team and work with the best players in the country.

“With successful, passionate performances we have the chance to inspire an entire country. The two wins against France and the Netherlands in March really touched me.

“We want to play a successful home European Championship together and I’m really looking forward to it together with my coaching team.”

German FA president Bernd Neuendorf added: “It is a strong signal for the DFB and the national team that Julian Nagelsmann will remain national coach beyond the home European Championships, because he is on the wish list of many big clubs across Europe.

“But the national team is for Julian Nagelsmann more than just a job, it’s a real matter close to his heart.

“Now there is planning security and everyone can concentrate entirely on a successful performance at the European Championships.”
